Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team won its seventh straight match after sweeping Nyack 3-0 (25-9, 25-21, 25-10) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday morning in the Gallagher Center.
After sweeping its fourth match in a row, Philadelphia improves to 9-4 overall and 5-1 in the CACC. Nyack is now 1-12 overall, 0-5 against the conference.
Prior to the match, the Rams held their Senior Day ceremony honoring Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East), Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy), and Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic).
Hughes recorded a match-high 13 kills, while hitting .385, and four digs to lead the Rams. Courtney Wensel (Bechtsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) and Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) added seven kills each, while Manley contributed six kills and six digs.
Morvin had a match-best 26 assists. Emily Pilla recorded a career-high 16 digs.
The Rams easily controlled the first set, hitting .440 and forcing the Warriors to hit -.100. The key to the set was a 10-0 run, that included six Nyack attack errors, to give Philadelphia a 13-4 lead. Hughes had five kills in the set, while Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added three.
With the help of two kills from Hughes and Justus, Philadelphia staked itself out to a 10-4 set two lead. Nyack got back into the set thanks to four Philadelphia errors and would eventually take a 14-13 lead on a Lindsay Miller kill. Philadelphia faced a 19-17 deficit, but used an 8-2 run to come from behind and win the set. Wensel had a pair of kills during the set-winning surge.
Philadelphia pulled away early in the final set, getting out to an 11-2 lead. Manley led the run with three kills. The advantage grew to 14 points (23-9) on an Olivia Manning (Westfield, N.J./Westfield) kill—one of the three she recorded. Justus ended the match with a kill. Philadelphia's offense was solid in the set, hitting .400 for the second time in the match.
Miller led the Warriors with six kills, while Alexus Winters added five.
Philadelphia welcomes Wilmington (Del.) to the Gallagher Center for a battle for first place in the CACC southern division on Wednesday, Oct. 7 at 6 p.m.
