Women's volleyball defeats Bloomfield, 3-1

Box Score

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Courtney Wensel (Betchelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) and Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) both recorded 13 kills as the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team picked up a big road victory, defeating Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) northern division leader Bloomfield 15-25, 27-25, 28-26, 25-23 in a conference match Saturday afternoon in The Gym.

Philadelphia's winning streak grew to 12 as the Rams, the leader in the southern division, improve to 14-4 overall and 10-1 against the CACC. Bloomfield goes to 14-3 overall and 8-3 in conference play.

The Rams struggled in the opening set as they committed a season-high 11 attack errors and hit a season worst -0.250. Meanwhile, Bloomfield recorded 10 kills with only one error and hit .450. Philadelphia was only down 12-9 until Bloomfield went on a 9-2 run to open up a 21-11 lead.

Philadelphia was down 14-10 in the second set but used the momentum from a bad set by Bloomfield to go on an 8-3 run, which included a kill from five different players, and move in front 18-17. The Bears responded with five of the next six points to reclaim a three-point lead, 22-19. Behind two kills from Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River), the Rams came back to grab a 24-23 lead. After a Bear timeout, Bloomfield got a Kali Viles kill and a Samantha Rios service ace to go up 25-24, a point away from taking a 2-0 match lead. Hughes denied the Bears that chance with a kill to tie the score at 25. Then, Bloomfield committed back-to-back attack errors to let Philadelphia tie the match at 1-1.

A string of four straight Philadelphia points, capped off by a Justus kill, gave the Rams a 21-16 advantage, resulting in a Bloomfield timeout. Like the second set, the Bears came out of the break strong, a 7-1 surge, to jump in front 23-22. Justus and Wensel stopped the run with consecutive kills to put Philadelphia up 24-23. Once again, a Bloomfield timeout paid off as the Bears scored two straight points to sit on set point at 25-24. Philadelphia was able to fight off a pair of set points (25-24 and 26-25) and then win the set on a Wensel ace and a Bloomfield miscue.

In the final set, Philadelphia faced a 23-20 deficit after a Philadelphia service error. The Rams came back with a Justus kill and an Emily Pilla service ace to close the gap to 23-22. Bloomfield called timeout, but this time the Rams were fazed, getting another Pilla kill and an Allison Manley kill to go within one point of victory. The Bears used their final timeout to no avail. The match's final play was a bad set giving the Rams a big road triumph.

Hughes finished the match with eight kills. Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil Academy) had a season-high 30 assists, while Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) posted 20 digs.

Dianmarie Rivera paced the Bears with 14 kills.

Philadelphia heads to Waterbury, Conn. to face Post in a CACC match on Saturday, Oct. 24 at noon.
