Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) recorded a career-high 20 kills and hit .621 to lead the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team to its 11 straight victory as the Rams defeated visiting Georgian Court 25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 25-12 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Thursday night in the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia improves to 13-4 overall, 9-1 in the CACC, and snaps a three-match losing streak to Georgian Court. The Lions fall to 11-11 overall and 6-4 against the conference.
Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) helped out the Philadelphia effort with 12 kills and 18 digs for her eighth double-double of 2015. Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa. Saint Basil Academy) contributed 26 assists, while Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md./Huntingtown) added 24 assists. Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) led the defense with a match-high 29 digs.
Philadelphia was in command for a majority of the opening set thanks to an 8-2 run, including two Wensel kills, to open the match. Back-to-back kills from Taylor Winchester sparked a surge of four straight Lion points to trim the Ram advantage to 8-6. Later in the set, Philadelphia established a five-point cushion (18-13) with three straight points. With the Rams up 19-15, a Kelsie Blue kill started a Lion 6-1 run to put Georgian Court ahead for the first time, 21-20. After a Philadelphia timeout, the Rams got kills from Justus and Wensel to reclaim a one point lead. This forced Georgian Court to take a timeout and respond with three points in a row to grab a 24-22 advantage. The Rams fought off two set points, getting kills from Justus and Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham). With the score tied at 25, Blue recorded a kill and Kelsey Oliver came through with a service ace to give the Lions a 27-25 set one win.
Neither team was able to gain much separation in the early stages of set two as both teams held no more than a two-point lead. Philadelphia appeared as if it was going to pull away, breaking a 10-all tie with five of the next six points to take a 15-11 lead on an Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) kill. Georgian Court came back to close the gap to 18-17. After the Rams scored three straight points to reclaim a four-point lead (21-17), the Lions fought back with a 6-2 surge to tie the set at 23. Philadelphia recovered nicely with a kill from Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and a Lion attack error to win the set and tie the match at one.
Justus played a huge role in Philadelphia's third set victory, recording 10 of the team's 17 kills, without an error, on 13 attempts. Trailing 17-12, Hughes ignited the Rams with a kill and started a 13-2 run that would give Philadelphia the set and a 2-1 match lead. Philadelphia had nine kills, six from Justus, and two service aces during the rally. Led by Justus' .769 hitting percentage, Philadelphia hit a match-high .238 in the third.
After trading the four points of the final set, Justus put down a kill to start a run of four straight points to put the Rams ahead 6-2. Georgian Court came back to close the gap to 7-5, Philadelphia wouldn't let the Lions get any closer as it went on a 13-3 run—which included three Wensel service aces, two Justus kills, and five Lion attack errors—to go move in front 20-8. The Rams forced the Lions to hit -0.226 in the final set.
Peggy Rosario led Georgian Court with 11 kills, while Blue and Winchester added nine kills.
