Box Score WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 27-25, 25-19) of Davis & Elkins on the opening day of the West Chester RAM Fest to give head coach Jack Killion his first career win.
Sophomore Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and junior Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) led the Philadelphia (1-0) offense with seven kills each. Manley was strong defensively, adding a match-best 17 digs. Senior Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) contributed six kills, while freshman Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) had five kills and 13 digs. Junior Nina Morvin and sophomore Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenberg) chipped in with 15 assists each.
Elizabeth Estes paced Davis & Elkins (0-1) with a match-high nine kills.
The Rams used Senator back-to-back miscues and a block by junior Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Manley to break a 10-all tie and take a three-point lead. The margin grew to 15-11 on the second of Ecker's four first-set kills. Philadelphia hit .333 (12-4-24), while holding Davis & Elkins to .062 (10-8-32).
In danger of dropping set two, Philadelphia was the beneficiary of three straight Davis & Elkins errors to not only fight off set point but also move ahead 25-24. After a Nicole Miller kill tied the set at 25, Laucella and Ecker recorded kills to give the Rams a 2-0 match lead.
With the help of three Hughes kills and two service aces from sophomore Michelle Chai, Philadelphia stormed out to an 11-5 set three lead and never looked back to complete the sweep. Hughes finished the set with five kills.
Philadelphia wraps up the RAM Fest on Saturday, Sept. 6 with matches against Notre Dame (Ohio) and host West Chester.
