Box Score BRONXVILLE, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to come from behind and knock off host Concordia (N.Y.) 3-2 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday afternoon in the Meyer Athletic Center.
Concordia (1-8, 0-7 CACC) got out to the 2-0 lead by winning the first two sets 25-19 and 26-24. Philadelphia (6-9, 4-2 CACC) recovered to take the last three sets 25-18, 25-21, and 15-9.
Outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) led the Philadelphia offense with a team-high 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .273. Middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) tallied 10 kills.
Setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil Academy) picked up her fifth double-double of the year with 22 assists and 10 digs. Fellow setter Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) had 23 assists. Outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) paced the defense with 19 digs.
Philadelphia owned a 13-10 opening set lead after a 4-0 run that included two kills from middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham), a Lyman service ace, and a kill by middle hitter Corinne Justus. Behind two kills and two blocks from Zoe Mannino, Concordia scored seven straight points to move ahead 17-13. The Rams got as close at 18-16.
Set two was a back-and-forth affair, featured 13 ties and seven lead changes, and neither team led by more than two points. The Clippers took a late 24-22 lead on a ball-handling error. After a timeout, Manley helped Philadelphia fight off two set points with a pair of kills. Concordia came back to take the set on a Mannino kill and a ball-handling error.
The Rams started their comeback by never trailing during the third set to close within 2-1. A Manley block allowed Philadelphia to take an 11-4 advantage. Concordia responded with six straight points to cut the gap to 11-10 on a kill by Victoria Carpenter. Back-to-back attack errors by the Clippers allowed the Rams to regain a six-point advantage at 22-16.
The fourth set was almost as hotly contested as set two with 11 ties and seven lead changes. Trailing 19-17, Philadelphia made an 8-2 run to end the set and even the match at two. Hughes had two kills during the surge and the Clippers made four errors.
Philadelphia used the momentum from the end of set four and applied it to the fifth set as it got out to a 10-2 lead in the decider. Concordia made six errors to help Philadelphia establish the eight-point lead. After the Clippers closed within 14-9, the Rams won the match on an attack error.
Sydney Darden had 20 kills for Concordia, while Jenny Martin tallied 50 assists.
Philadelphia heads to Goldey-Beacom for a CACC match on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
