Balanced attack gets women's volleyball by Holy Family, 3-1

PHILADELPHIA – Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill), Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus), and Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) all recorded 10 kills for the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team in a 3-1 win (25-23, 21-25, 25-20, 25-12) over Holy Family in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Wednesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia improves to 13-12 overall and 10-5 in the CACC, while Holy Family is now 11-15, 9-6 in conference play.

Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) added nine kills and 12 digs for the Rams. Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil's Academy) tallied 25 assists and Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) contributed 18 assists.

Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) recorded a match-high 20 digs.

Philadelphia opened up a 14-7 set one advantage on an Ecker kill. Holy Family got back into the set with a 13-5 run, capped off by a Melanie Ingram kill, to move ahead 21-20. With the set tied at 21, Ingram gave the Tigers a 23-21 lead with back-to-back kills. The Rams scored the final four points of the set, three Tiger errors and a Hughes kill, to take a 1-0 match lead.

The Tigers controlled the second set with the help of an 8-2 surge that included four Ingram kills. Philadelphia got as close as 18-16 on a Justus kill, one of three she had in the set. Emma Herring allowed the visitors to regain a five-point cushion (21-16) with a kill.

Set three was back-and-forth in the early stages, featuring nine ties and four lead changes. With the set tied at 15, Philadelphia took advantage of an attack error and a Lyman kill to grab a 17-15 lead. Ecker's fourth and final kill of the set pushed the Ram lead to 20-17. After the Tigers made it a 21-20 affair, the Rams earned the last four points to take a 2-1 match edge.

The Rams quickly closed out the match with 19 of the final 25 points. Philadelphia hit .360 (12-3-25) in the final set, while Holy Family hit .000 (7-7-38).

Ingram led the Tigers with a match-high 21 kills, while Kacie Brien added 37 assists and 14 digs.

Philadelphia heads to USciences for a CACC match on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7:10 p.m.
