Box Score NEW CASTLE, Del. – Middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) led the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team with 13 kills in a 3-1 loos to Wilmington (Del.) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Wednesday night.
Philadelphia (11-11, 8-4 CACC) took the early lead after winning the first set 27-25. However, Wilmington (13-12, 9-3 CACC) would win the next three sets 27-25, 25-20, 25-20.
Setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./St. Basil's Academy) recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 23 assists and 15 digs. Outside hitter Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) tallied nine kills and 22 digs.
Libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) contributed team-high 26 digs, while setter Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) added 20 assists.
Philadelphia didn't lead in set one until Lyman and Ecker recorded back-to-back kills to give the Rams a 23-22 lead. After middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) gave the Rams set point with a kill, Wilmington came back with three straight points to take a 25-24 advantage. Lyman tied the set with a kill and middle hitter Corinne Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) had consecutive kills to end the set.
A 9-3 Wilmington run broke a 9-9 set two tie and put the Wildcats ahead 18-12. Five different Rams recorded a kill during an 8-2 run that tied the set at 20. After a Kaitlin DiGiacinto kill gave the Wildcats a 24-22 lead, the Rams fought off three set points and knotted the set at 25. Wilmington won the set on kills from Elle Harris and Alex Siolos.
Trailing 12-5 in the third, Philadelphia rattled off eight of the set's next nine points to tie the score at 13 on a ball handing error. Wilmington answered back with a 6-2 run to reestablish a six-point advantage (23-17). A Philadelphia attack error ended the set and gave the home team a 2-1 lead in the match.
With the final set tied at 13, Wilmington would go on a 10-1 surge, which included five Philadelphia errors to storm ahead 23-14. Three straight Wildcat attack errors allowed the Rams to close the gap to 24-20. Harris ended the match with her sixth kill of the match.
DiGiancinto had a match-high 15 kills, while Allison Briley and Siolos added 13 each. Shelby Henderson tallied a match-high 28 digs.
Philadelphia returns to the Gallagher Center to face Chestnut Hill in a CACC match on Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.
