Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team overcome a two sets to one deficit and 13-11 deficit in the fifth set to knock off Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) rival Chestnut Hill, 3-2, in Sorgenti Arena Tuesday night.
The Rams (4-4, 3-0 CACC) jumped out to an early lead as they edged out the Griffins (3-8, 1-2 CACC) in set one, 25-23. Chestnut Hill responded with 25-14 victories in the second and third sets. Philadelphia stayed alive by winning set four, 25-20. The Rams completed their comeback by taking the fifth set, 16-14.
Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore), sophomore outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles E.), senior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley), and sophomore setter Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla./Springstead) all recorded double-doubles in the victory.
Olson had 12 kills and 10 digs, while Manley posted 10 kills and a match-high 29 digs. Martin tallied 29 assists and 11 digs, and Schilling added 22 assists and 10 digs.
Senior middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) led the offense with 15 kills, while sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River).
The Griffins received a match-best 26 kills and 18 digs from Madison McBride. Emily Drew had 64 assists and 11 digs.
Philadelphia took control of the opening set with four consecutive points to take a 17-12 lead, the team's biggest of the set, and was able to get a Manley kill on its fourth attempt at set point to hold on.
Chestnut Hill's offense came in life in the second and third sets as the Griffins posted a .310 hitting percent in set two and a .395 hitting percentage in the third to take the lead.
A 6-1 run late in the fourth set helped Philadelphia tie the match at two sets each. Leading 18-17, the Rams received three Griffin attack errors, a solo block and kill from senior middle hitter Jordan Milligan (Evansville, Ind./Central), and a kill from freshman middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) to extend the cushion to 24-18. Philadelphia hit .300 in the set.
Trailing 13-11 in the final set, Philadelphia scored points on two Chestnut Hill errors and a Hughes kill to take a 14-13 advantage. After the Griffins tied the set on an Alexandra DePalma kill, Manley recorded a kill and Milligan and Hughes teamed up for a block to win the match.
Philadelphia returns home on Saturday, Sept. 28 to face CACC opponent Nyack at noon and Adelphi at 4 p.m.
