Women's volleyball back in win column after 3-0 Homecoming Day sweep of Concordia (N.Y.)

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team snapped its three-match losing streak by sweeping visiting Concordia (N.Y.), 3-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Saturday morning in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia (6-7, 5-2 CACC) earned the victory with set scores of 25-17, 25-20, and 25-16.

Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) each recorded 10 kills to lead the Philadelphia offense. Hughes matches her season-best hitting percentage of .556 by posting her 10 kills on 18 swings and no errors.

Sophomore setter Allyson Schillinger (Spring Hill, Fla./Springstead) tallied 15 assists, while senior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) contributed 11 assists. Senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa./South Side) had a match-high 18 digs.

Concordia (1-6, 1-6 CACC) received nine kills and 14 digs from Irina Impellittiere. Hillary Hoffman racked up 18 assists.

The Rams quickly fell behind 6-0 in the first set, forcing head coach Mark Magarity to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, Philadelphia responded with a 19-5 surge to grab a 19-11 lead. An attack error came the Rams their largest lead of the set at 23-14. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) and Hughes each had three kills in the set.

In the second set, the Rams rattled off eight consecutive points to take a 10-4 lead and control of the set. Olson led the offense with seven kills.

Philadelphia recorded a match-best .258 hitting percentage (14-6-31) in the third set victory. The Rams broke a six-all tie with a 14-4 run to take a 20-10 lead. Junior middle hitter Lauren Elliott (Austin, Texas/North Middlesex) recorded all five of her kills in the final set.

Philadelphia hosts Goldey-Beacom in a CACC match on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m.
