Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team won its seven straight Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match as it knocked off visiting Chestnut Hill, 3-1 (25-22, 25-13, 25-27, 25-10), in a conference match Friday night in the Gallagher Center.
Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and senior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) each recorded a double-double in the victory for Philadelphia (12-8, 11-2 CACC). Olson had a match-high 14 kills and 23 digs to record her team-leading eighth double-double of 2013. Martin posted her third double-double of the season with 23 assists and 10 digs.
Junior middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) added 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Freshman libero Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) tallied 30 digs, a match-best.
After swapping the first 14 points of the first set, Philadelphia went on a 5-1 run to open up a 12-8 lead. Consecutive kills from freshman middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham)—who finished the match with nine kills—gave the Rams a set-high six-point lead at 17-11. Chestnut Hill (7-17, 5-8 CACC) closed within two (24-22) on a Kaitlyn Schock. Hughes ended the threat with fourth kill in the set.
Philadelphia controlled the second set with a hitting percentage of .341 and keeping Chestnut Hill to a .040 percentage. Back-to-back attack errors by the Griffins capped an 11-4 Ram run that gave the home team a 12-5 lead. The Rams took their first double-digit lead of the set when Olson's fourth kill in the set put them ahead 19-9. Olson's sixth and final kill of set two gave Philadelphia the set and a 2-0 match lead.
The third set was the by far the tightest of the four, featuring 15 ties and eight lead changes. Three straight points by the Griffins broke a four-all tie and allowed them to take a three-point lead, the largest by either team in the set. Trailing 24-22, Philadelphia managed to rattle off three straight points to not only fight off two set points, but take a 25-24 lead. Schock single-handedly rallied Chestnut Hill to the set win by recording three consecutive kills.
The Rams put away set four early on as they scored six straight points to jump out to a 7-1 cushion. After Chestnut Hill closed the gap to four (11-7), Philadelphia scored 11 unanswered points to power its way to a 22-7 lead. The Rams recorded a hitting percentage of .256, while the Griffins hit -.098.
Madison McBride and Schock led Chestnut Hill with 11 kills each. Emily Drew had 18 assists and 13 digs.
Philadelphia looks for its eighth straight CACC win when its travels to Holy Family on Wednesday, Oct. 30 for a 7 p.m. match.
