Women's volleyball sneaks by Post, 3-2

WATERBURY, Conn. – Senior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) recorded a season-high 20 kills and 13 digs in the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team's 3-2 (20-25, 25-15, 27-29, 27-25, 15-13) Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Post Saturday afternoon in the Drunber Center.

Sophomore middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) also registered double-digit kills with 11 and six digs. Sophomore outside hitter Allison Manley and junior middle hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) both had nine kills each. Manley also tallied 17 digs.

Sophomore setter Allyson Schillnger (Spring Hill, Fla./Springstead) contributed 24 assists, while junior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) added 22 assists. Freshman libero Michelle Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) had a career-high 23 digs.

In the first set, Post (4-16, 4-7 CACC) broke a six-all tie with a 5-1 run to open up an 11-7 lead. A block from Stephanie Zarakas and Morgan Griffins gave the Eagles a set-high 19-11 lead. Philadelphia (10-7, 9-2 CACC) was able to close the gap to 23-20, but Post scored the final two points to close out the set.

Philadelphia had just one hitting error in the second set to record a .412 hitting percent. After a Kerrin Kallamn kill put Post ahead 11-10, Philadelphia took control of the set, ending it with a 15-4 run. Olson had five kills during the set.

The Rams fell into an early 4-0 hole to open set three. Philadelphia eventually overcame the deficit to tie the set at 21 with a kill from Ecker. The teams took turns scoring points until a block from Hughes and freshman middle hitter Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and an Olson kill put the Rams ahead by one, 26-25. Down 27-26, the Eagles won the set with three straight points—an Emily Wilman kill and two Ram attack errors.

Philadelphia was able to win a back-and-forth fourth set that featured 18 ties and 12 lead changes. With the set tied at 25, a block from junior middle hitter Jordan Milligan (Evansville, Ind./Central) and Martin gave Philadelphia a chance at set point. The Rams won the set on a ball-handling error.

The Rams got out to a 6-3 lead in the final set. Post rallied to score eight of the next 10 points and take an 11-8 lead. With the help of five Post errors and a Laucella kill, the Rams rebounded to move ahead 14-12. Manley ended the match with a kill.

Kallman led the Eagles with 14 kills. Julia Slyaktina had 48 assists and 20 digs.

Philadelphia ends its string of road matches with a non-conference affair at Millersville on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
