Box Score NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team concluded its 2012 season after a 3-0 loss to Dominican (N.Y.) in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament semifinal match Friday evening in the Wilmington University Athletic Complex.
Philadelphia, who was the southern division second seed, wraps up the year with a 21-9 overall record—the fifth 20+ win season under head coach Mark Magarity. The Rams end their season in the semifinal round of the conference tournament for the third consecutive year.
Dominican improves to 25-7 and advances to the conference final on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
Senior outside hitter Danielle Carney (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks) paced the Philadelphia offense with nine kills. Junior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) and freshman outside hitter Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles E.) had five kills each.
Junior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) posted 10 assists. Senior Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa./South Side) led the defense with nine digs, while Olson and Carney contributed eight digs a piece.
The Chargers Tori Dexter recorded a match-high 13 kills. Whitney Ranger tallied 25 assists and Jordyn Fuller had 18 digs.
In the first set, which Dominican won 25-22, the Chargers jumped out to an 8-4 lead behind four early kills from Dexter. Philadelphia rallied back and tied the set at 11. Manley broke a 17-all tie with her third kill of the set to give the Rams an 18-17 advantage. The Chargers stormed back with seven of the next eight points to get to set point at 24-19. Back-to-back kills by senior middle hitter Ellie Edgar (Cuyohoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) and junior middle hitter Jordan Milligan (Evansville, Ind./Central), and a McCarthy service aces pulled Philadelphia within 24-22.
The Chargers snapped a 10-all set two tie with a 5-1 run to take a 15-11 lead. After a Ram timeout, Dominican extended the gap to 20-13. Sophomore outside hitter Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) recorded a kill and Olson had a service ace to help shrink the deficit to 20-16. Coming out of a timeout, Dominican went on a 5-2 surge to take the set 25-18. Dexter paced the Chargers with six kills, while Carney had three for the Rams.
The start of the final set saw Dominican get out to a 7-3 lead. Philadelphia forced Dominican to call a timeout with a 5-3 response to cut the margin to 10-8. Consecutive kills by Michelle Fiorvanti allowed the Chargers to move ahead 19-13. Carney's final kill of the match got Philadelphia within five at 20-15. Dominican won the set 25-18.
