Box Score 2 LYNDHURST, N.J. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was upended twice by Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Felician in a doubleheader, 10-4 and 3-2, Thursday afternoon at Lyndhurst Recreation Park.
GAME ONE
The Golden Falcons (12-14, 6-0 CACC) staked themselves out to a 6-0 lead thanks to a big first inning that included RBI triples from Rob Fisher and Andrew LaMura and a two-run single by Brennan Price. The lead grew to 7-0 in the third on a Matt Diesel two-out base hit and a throwing error on the same play that allowed Price to score from second.
Philadelphia (6-11, 3-7 CACC) got back into the contest with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and six to pull within 7-3. With runners at second and third, left fielder Daniel Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) brought home second baseman Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) with a ground out to second base in the fourth to break the shutout. One inning later, it was a RBI groundout off the bat of third baseman David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) to plate starting pitcher/designated hitter Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) for the team's second run. In the sixth, shortstop Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) produced a double to left center to plate center fielder Lou Karcanes (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock), who walked to open the inning one at bat earlier, for the third run.
Felician took advantage of two Philadelphia errors to start the seventh and plated three runs to regain a seven-run cushion. After reaching base via an error to start the inning, J.R. Meneses would score from third on a wild pitch. LaMura drove in the other two runs with a single to center.
The Rams scored once more in the ninth on a two-out single by Gonzalez.
First baseman Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) recorded two of Philadelphia's seven hits. The Golden Falcons recorded 11 hits, three from Matt Diesel and two by Jason Polgano, Price, and LaMura.
Rob Naughton was the winning pitcher (4-0) allowing two runs—one earned—on three hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked six. Garza took the loss after giving up the six runs in the first.
GAME TWO
The nightcap went scoreless until the home half of the fourth went Felician scored a single run and added another run in the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. LaMura was responsible for the first run of the game with a two-RBI single down the right field line. In the fifth, Matt Kleinstein doubled the lead, scoring on a wild pitch.
Philadelphia got both runs back in the sixth inning and tied the score at two. With the bases loaded, Wells hit a ground ball to first. In an attempt to cut down Klusman at the plate, Price threw home, but Kleinstein couldn't hold on to the throw allowing Klusman to score the Rams' first run. Two hitters later, McTaggart stroked a single to right field to tie the score.
Felician wasted little time reclaiming the lead as the Golden Falcons pushed a run across on a two-out single by Bruce Strickland to move ahead 3-2.
Philadelphia was stymied by the Felician bullpen over the final three innings, only getting one runner on base—Garza with a two-out walk in the eighth.
Matthew Facendo tossed three scoreless innings in relief of Dean Loucka to record the victory (2-0). Facendo struck out three and gave up two hits. John Holland threw a perfect ninth for the save.
Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) gave up three runs—two earned—on six hits and fanned two in 5.1 innings in a losing effort.
Catcher John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton) went 2-for-4 for the Rams.
Felician outhit Philadelphia 7-6.
