Wells goes yard, O'Donnell dazzles as baseball gets split with Le Moyne

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PHILADELPHIA – First baseman Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) hit his first collegiate home run and Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) turned in five shutout innings as the Philadelphia University baseball team defeated Le Moyne 3-0 in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader at the RAMP Playground on Friday. The Dolphins won the opener 2-0.

Philadelphia (1-2) took advantage of a third inning leadoff double from catcher John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton) to take a 1-0 lead. After the Brocious double, center fielder Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) beat out a sacrifice bunt to put Rams at the corners. Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) grounded into a 6-4-3 double play, but was able to bring Brocious home.

Wells—who went 2-for-2 in the nightcap—doubled the Philadelphia advantage in the fourth when he drove the first pitch he saw from Damian Powers over the right-center field fence for the team's first homer of the season.

Goetz tacked on the team's final run with a RBI double in the fifth to knock in Dave McTaggart, who singled and stole second to start the frame.

O'Donnell made the lead stand up as he fanned six batters and allowed just two hits in five innings of work to record his first win since the 2013 season. Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) threw a scoreless seventh to record the save.

Powers recorded six strikeouts in a complete-game loss.

In the opener, Le Moyne's (5-8) Ryan Davis threw a complete-game one-hitter and struck out 11 batters.

Philadelphia's lone hit was a lead-off double by Gonzalez in the bottom of the first inning.

Brett Charbonneau helped Davis out in the fifth single with a two-out RBI single to bring in Dylan Swetman and give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. Pat Wright scored Le Moyne's second run as he came home from third on a wild pitch in the sixth.

Paul Goldman (Glen Rock, N.J./Glen Rock) took the loss for Philadelphia. He recorded one strikeout, while allowing one run on one hit. Starter Stephen Dickerson  (Columbus, Ohio/Danbury) posted one strikeout as he turned in four shutout innings.

Philadelphia and Le Moyne close out their four-game series with a doubleheader at RAMP Playground on Saturday, March 14 at 4 p.m.
