Baseball falls to Millersville in season opener 5-4

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team got its 2015 season underway with a 5-4 loss to Millersville in a non-conference game Wednesday morning at the RAMP Playground.

The Rams (0-1) took advantage of three walks and a hit batter to score three times in the bottom of the seventh inning, despite getting just one hit—a leadoff double from left Ken McCormick, to take a 4-1 lead.

With the bases loaded and one out, designated hitter David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) hit a grounder to first that Millersville first baseman John Brogan booted to allow McCormick to score from third to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Catcher John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton) pushed the lead to 3-1 after working a walk. Two batters later, second baseman Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) was plunked by a 3-1 pitch for the third run of the inning.

Millersville (11-3) rallied back with two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to move ahead 5-4.

In the seventh, the Marauders took advantage of three straight walks to start the frame. Third baseman Tyler McDonald drove a 0-1 Cory Dean (Danbury, Conn./Danbury)—who just came in for Jake Goldberg (Morrisville, Pa./Pennsburg)—off the left-center field fence for a two-run single. An inning later, McDonald and right fielder Chas McCormick recorded RBI base hits to put Millersville in front.

The Marauders' Sean Stephenson threw a scoreless seventh and eighth inning to earn the win (1-0). Matt Binder turned in a perfect ninth for the save.

Millersville took a 1-0 lead on a third-inning single from Brogan. Philadelphia came right back in the bottom of half of the frame with a RBI double by Gonzalez.

Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School), Brocious, and Gonzalez all had a hit.

Dean (0-1) took the loss for Philadelphia, who used eight pitchers during the contest.

Philadelphia returns to action with a non-conference doubleheader against Le Moyne on Friday, March 13 at 10 a.m. at Father Judge High School.
