Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team recorded its first double-header sweep of the 2014 season by taking two
Philadelphia improves 6-9 overall, while Lincoln falls to 1-13.
The Rams scored three runs in the third, five more in the fourth, and single runs in the fifth and sixth to take a 10-0 lead.
In the third inning, Philadelphia did not record a hit, but was helped out by three Lincoln errors. Senior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and junior shortstop Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) each had one RBI in the inning.
Yoshiyama and senior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) came through with one-out RBI singles in the five-run fourth.
In the fifth, senior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College High School) managed to circle the bases with two outs to score the Rams' eighth run. Burgmann stroked a single to center field and used two wild pitches to advance to third. Senior second base John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College High School) knocked Burgmann in with a double down the left field line.
One inning later, Gonzalez knocked in Yoshiyama, who doubled to the right field corner to open the inning, with a single to center.
After Lincoln got on the board on a throwing error in the top of the eighth, senior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) knocked in two runs with a one-out base hit during a four-run eighth that made it a 14-1 affair.
Yoshiyama had three of Philadelphia's 12 hits and scored four times in the victory. Gonzalez, Reigner, and Burgmann added two hits each.
Senior starting pitcher Rob Spragis (Chalfont, Pa./C.B. South) earned his first win of the season (1-0) with five shutout innings of work. He struck out two and gave up four hits.
Senior Joseph Capparelli (Miami, Fla./Sunset) threw the final four innings, allowing two runs on one hit and fanning three, to earn the save.
DeVante Parker and Martin Evans led Lincoln with two hits each.
Terence Berry took the loss (0-4) as he allowed nine runs, three earned, on seven hits in five innings.
In game two, Philadelphia did all of its damage in the first inning as it sent 17 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on six hits. It was the Rams' first inning with 10 runs since Philadelphia scored 11 times in the fifth inning of a 16-13 win over Nyack on May 1, 2010.
Junior right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had two hits and three RBIs in the inning. He had a single to center field and a two-run single to right. Sophomore designated hitter Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) drove in two runs with a double to deep center field.
Freshman second baseman David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) added a RBI base hit and Force drew a bases loaded walk.
Philadelphia outhit Lincoln 7-5.
Four Ram pitchers combined to surrender just one run on five hits. Sophomore starter Desmond Drummond (Philadelphia, Pa./GAMP) was the winning pitcher as he went four innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Brandon Bolden had two of the Lions' five hits. Ronald Lashley brought home Lincoln's only run with a bases loaded walk in the third.
Philadelphia hosts East Stroudsburg in a non-conference game on Tuesday, March 18 at 3 p.m.
