Baseball outslugged by Bloomsburg in non-conference doubleheader

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader by host Bloomsburg, 13-4 and 11-6 , Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia's record is now 13-18-1, while Bloomsburg goes to 6-23.

In the first game, the Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a RBI fielder's choice from sophomore right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior designated hitter Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) in the top of the first.

Behind a Corey Baiada grand slam, the Huskies came back in the bottom of the inning to score five times and take a 5-2 lead.

Freshman third baseman Axel Rivera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico/The Perkiomen School) got a run back from Philadelphia with a RBI single in the second.

Bloomsburg added to its lead with two runs in the second and third innings.

The Rams had one more run cross the plate in the sixth when freshman second baseman Michael Tregilia (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) grounded out to plate junior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen).

Nick Donofry was the winning pitcher as he went four innings, allowing three runs on five hits.  Kyle Hunter went the final three innings for the save.

Sophomore pitcher Stephen Uhlak (Ocean Gate, N.J./Central Reg.) struck out eight in six innings, while giving up 13 runs—eight earned—on 13 hits.

Junior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and Force has two hits each.

Baiada paced the Huskies with a 2-for-4 game with six RBIs.

Bloomsburg scored at least once in each of the first five innings, including five runs in the fifth, during game two.

The Rams jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on a double play that scored Yoshiyama, who doubled to open the inning and went to third on a passed ball.

Junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and McCormick posted back-to-back singles in the fifth inning. In the seventh, sophomore catcher Jake Madnick (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) connected for a RBI double and the Rams scored two more runs on a throwing error.

Reigner, McCormick, and Rivera recorded two hits each.

Baiada was 4-for-4, including a two-run single in the fifth, and four RBIs.

Matt Jaskilka earned the win by allowing three runs on five hits in 4.2 innings. Junior Rob Spragis (Chalfont, Pa./C.B. South) took the loss after giving up six runs—four earned—on eight hits in four innings.

Philadelphia and Bloomsburg head to Alumni Field to wrap up their three-game series on Tuesday, April 9 at 3 p.m.
