Rams end non-conference slate with 8-3 loss to No. 25 Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team dropped its final non-conference contest of the season by an 8-3 score to host No. 25 Kutztown Tuesday afternoon on North Campus Field.

The Rams are now 19-26-1 overall. Philadelphia closes out the regular season with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at No. 8 Wilmington (Del.) on Wednesday, May 1 at 3 p.m.

Kutztown improves to 30-11.

Philadelphia put together a two-out rally in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) got things started with a single and moved up 90 feet on a single by senior first baseman Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill E.). Junior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College HS) brought McCormick home with a base hit to right.

Kutztown got the run back in the bottom of the inning on a Brandon Hickey single.

Sophomore shortstop Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) gave the Rams a 3-1 advantage with RBI singles in the fifth and seventh innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Golden Bears put their first three hitters on base with two singles and a hit batter. Pinch hitter Kelly Stoudt entered the game and immediately emptied the bases with a three-run triple to put the home team in front 4-3. Stoudt added an insurance run as he came home on a wild pitch.

Kutztown tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Bohus, Burgmann, and Greenwood all two hits for Philadelphia, who had nine in the game.

Brandon Martinez, Todd Rubendall, Hickey and Stoudt paced the Golden Bears' 12-hit with two each. Stoudt finished the day with four RBIs.

James Rossi, the sixth of eight pitchers used by Kutztown, earned the win. Junior starter Rob Spragis (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks S.) took the loss as he allowed four runs on five hits and struck out three in six innings.
