Box Score 2 PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team extends its winning streak to five for the first time since 2010 after sweeping Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Concordia (N.Y.), 4-3 and 10-3, in a doubleheader on Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.
With the two victories, the Rams are now 8-13-1 overall and 3-0 in CACC play. The Clippers' record is 4-8 overall and 0-2 against the conference.
In the first game, junior second baseman John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College HS) was the hero as he delivered a single with two outs in the ninth for his second walk-off of the week. Two batters earlier, junior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College HS) plated the tying run with a single up the middle that brought home junior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), who singled to open the inning.
After giving up a run on a Luis Gonzalez sacrifice fly in the top of the first, the Rams got RBI singles from sophomore right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Burgmann to take a 2-1 lead.
Concordia answered with a Michael Barbetto RBI single in the second and a fielder's choice to bring in an unearned run in the fifth to move back in front, 3-2.
Junior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School), senior designated hitter Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill E.), and Burgmann all had three hits for Philadelphia—which had 15 in the game.
Joe Gallub had three of Concordia's seven hits.
Senior pitcher Russell Trojan (Springfield, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) threw three innings of one-hit relief to earn his second win of the year. Trojan fanned four. Starter David Lerro (Secane, Pa./Upper Darby) struck out six, while allowing three runs—two earned—on six hits in six innings.
In the nightcap, the Rams pounded out 10 hits and took advantage of five Clipper errors to earn the victory. McCormick continued to swing a hot bat as he went 3-for-3 with two RBIs. Bohus drove in a pair of runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate.
Yoshiyama, Reigner, and sophomore shortstop Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) each had a hit and a RBI. Reigner scored three runs and Greenwood came home twice.
Freshman pitcher Casey O'Donnell (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was the beneficiary of the run support as he earned the win. In 5.2 innings, O'Donnell allowed three runs—two earned—on six hits and struck out four. The Rams' bullpen combined to throw 3.1 innings of scoreless baseball.
Ryan Roman was 3-for-4 with a run scored for Concordia.
