The Rams Sweep Nyack In Final Home Doubleheader

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University baseball team (14-19, 11-9 CACC) ends their regular season with two wins against Nyack College on Saturday afternoon (5/1).  The Rams won the first game 5-2 and the second 16-13.

In the first game junior pitcher Kevin McGovern (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) went all nine innings getting the win for the team with 10 strikeouts.

Offensively in the first game the team scored five runs on five hits, while Nyack was only able to get two runs off of eight hits.  Senior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/Delone Catholic) led the team going two for four and getting two runs and two RBIs. 

Freshman catcher Kevin Gibbs (Pitman, NJ/ Pitman) also had two runs in the game.  The first was in the third inning after a sac-fly from junior third baseman Anthony DiFrancesco (Landenberg, PA/Salesianum).  The other was scored in the forth after a double from Mentzer, which also brought in senior outfielder Joe DiMezza (North Wales, PA/Lansdale Cathloic) to make it 5-1.

Nyack scored in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score of game one 5-2.

In the second game, senior pitcher Brian Rousseau (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) started off on the mound.  Junior Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA/Central) came in to finish off the forth inning.  Senior Eric Miele (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) came in to pitch two innings and freshman Jeff Bohus (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) finished up the game and got the win.

Nyack started off the game scoring eight runs in the first four innings, including back-to-back homers in the fourth. 

PhilaU went into the bottom of the fifth with an 8-2 deficient.  The team racked up 11 runs in the inning to get the lead.  Inning highlight came from DiFrancesco who had a three-run homer deep into the trees at center field.  The Rams ended the inning with a 13-8 lead.

But the game wasn't over yet.  The Warriors managed to score five runs in the next two innings, including a grand slam by junior outfielder Michael Frank, to tie up the game 13-13.

PhilaU entered the bottom of the seventh with Gibbs getting walked and later scoring.  Mentzer and DiFrancesco both got onto base and each scored off of wild pitches from the Warriors mound, making the final score 16-13.

The Rams are waiting to see if they have made the CACC playoffs, which should be announced later this weekend.
