Hartley's Homer Rallies Baseball to 12-8 Win over Sciences

Philadelphia, PA- The Philadelphia University baseball team (13-26, 10-12 CACC) got a 12-8 lift over the University of the Sciences (3-34, 2-18 CACC) on Tuesday afternoon.  PhilaU's senior catcher Jason Hartley (Levittown, PA/ Neshaminy) went 1-4 at the plate with hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning to lead the Rams.

USP struck in the first inning on a two-run homer from Pete McCauley.  The Rams responded with a lead- off triple from senior outfielder Dan Ellmer (Trenton, NJ/ Nottingham) that would rally PhilaU for a 3-2 lead on two hits.

The Devils would score three more in the third on three hits, but PhilaU responded with a big fourth inning.  The Ram got an RBI singles from senior outfielder Kyle Noonan (Morristown, NJ/ Morristown) and junior infielder Dan Wothers (Pennsburg, PA/ Upper Perkiomen) and scored two more runs on a USP error to go up 7-5.

USP tied it 7-7 on a throwing error by PhilaU's Hartley in the sixth, but the Rams edged ahead again-this time on a triple from sophomore third baseman Anthony DiFrancesco (Landenberg, PA/ Salesianum) and ensuing wild pitch by USP.  The Devils tied it at eight apiece in the seventh on an RBI single.

The seventh inning proved to be huge for the Rams as junior infielder Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA/ Delone Catholic) tripled and scored, followed by Hartley's three-run blast to give PhilaU a 12-8 lead (the final score).

PhilaU winning sophomore pitcher Kyle McGovern (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) had nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings, while senior pitcher Steve Benner (Philadelphia, PA/ Archbishop Ryan) came in relief for 2.0 innings- not allowing a single run or hit.

Next up for the Rams will be a road doubleheader at USP tomorrow (4/29) beginning at 2:00 p.m.
