Rams Fall to #10 Nationally Ranked Franklin Pierce 3-2, 5-3

Philadelphia, PA-  The Philadelphia University baseball team (1-5) dropped a doubleheader to the nationally-ranked #10 Franklin Pierce University Ravens (4-1) on Sunday afternoon in their home-opener at Alumni Field.  The Rams fell 3-2 in game one and 5-3 in the second game. 

In game one, the Rams took an early 1-0 advantage with a lead-off double from senior Dan Ellmer (Trenton, NJ) and a RBI single to right field from junior shortstop Tyler Mentzer (Gettysburg, PA).  Mentzer had three hits on the day.  

FPU's Kevin Rivers tied the game 2-2 in the top of the fourth inning with a homer to right field and the Ravens added the winning run in the top of the sixth to seal the 3-2 win in game one. 

PhilaU sophomore hurler Jared Farbman (Philadelphia, PA) had seven strikeouts in seven innings for the Rams; he goes to 1-1 on the season.  FPU's Tom Cote got the victory for the Ravens in 5.2 innings of work. 

In game two the Ravens notched three runs in the top of the first inning, off three hits including Ben Benigo's RBI triple.  The Rams responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single from sophomore Matt Fisher (Philadelphia, PA) to make it 3-1. 

In the bottom of the fourth, FPU hurler Kyle Vazquez walked in Phila senior Kyle Noonan (Morristown, NJ) to make it 3-2.  The Raven's got a two-RBI triple from Cliff Hicks in the top of the fifth to keep FPU up 5-2.

PhilaU's Mentzer singled in the bottom of the fifth to cut the Raven's lead to 5-3, as he stole second and scored on an error by the FPU second baseman. 

Ram's sophomore pitcher Kevin McGovern (Philadelphia, PA) had five strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched and goes to 0-1 on the season, while FPU's Kyle Vazquez (2-0) got the win. 

The Rams return to action on Tuesday, March 10th for a single game at West Chester at 3:30 p.m.
