Baseball Falls Late Against Central Missouri
HOUSTON, Texas – Leading throughout most of the game from the first inning, five runs in the eighth let the Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (2-1) suffer their first loss of the season to #3/4 nationally ranked University of Central Missouri (2-1) 11-8 in the last day of the Houston Winter Invitational.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Rams got on the board first with two first inning runs. Thomas Matuszewski hit a triple to right field that let Javon Hernandez score. Matuszewski got to home plate by way of a Justin Egner single up the middle to make it 2-0 to open the game
- The Mules got a run in the bottom of the first to trail 2-1 in the game. A scoreless second kept Jefferson ahead, with a scare as Central Missouri loaded the bases only for the Rams to get a flied out that helped them maintain their lead
- Jefferson put another score in the third as two walks and a hit by pitch loaded the bases for Gabe Silva. He knocked a single to second base to get a score in for the Rams. Though Jay Kalieta was tagged out at home plate after trying to advance from second, Jefferson went to the bottom of the inning ahead 3-1
- Rams added another score in the fourth with Hernandez single to the left side helped Luis Beato Mora score. After this, Jefferson and Central Missouri traded score in each inning, going back and forth that eventually saw the contest at 7-6 in the bottom of the eighth. The other scores for the Rams included a Silva single to right center and an Egner and Joshua Lopez single to left field in different innings to have the Rams up going to the bottom of the inning
- The Muhls got momentum, scoring five runs in the eighth off of two triples, a single, a sacrifice fly, and a pass ball to go up 11-7 in the ninth inning
- Jefferson added one more socre, a Beato Mora sacrifice fly to right field, but Central Missouri held onto their 11-8 lead, giving the Rams their first taste of defeat this season
