NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (13-11, 3-1 CACC) had a late lead slip away and suffered its first conference loss with a 15-8 setback at Wilmington (11-11, 4-1 CACC) on Saturday. Game two of the doubleheader was unable to be completed due to inclement weather and will be made up on a date to be determined.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wildcats blasted a three-run homer in the first inning to open the scoring. They tacked on an RBI single in the second to make it 4-0. The Rams got on the board with runs in the third and fourth.
Marquise Wood smacked an RBI double and
Joe Cencetti came home on an error. Wilmington led off the bottom of the fifth with a home run to increase its lead to three (5-2).
Jefferson rallied to go ahead with a four-run sixth. After the first hitter was retired, six straight Rams reached base.
Justin Espinal and
Ryan Coyle drew back-to-back walks with the bases loaded to get Jefferson within one. Wood then followed with a two-run single through the left side to give his team a 6-5 advantage.
The Rams added a pair of runs in the seventh with
Diego Santiago driving in one with a base hit and Wood recording his fourth RBI of the contest with a bases-loaded walk. However, the Wildcats flipped the script with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. After a fly out to start the frame, eight consecutive Wilmington batters reached safely without any outs being recorded as the inning snowballed on Jefferson. When the barrage ended, the Wildcats held a 12-8 lead. Wilmington tacked on three insurance runs in the eighth.
