Big inning, strong pitching pushes baseball to 8-1 win at Bloomfield

Box Score

BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – A six-run fourth inning combined with seven shutout innings from Abraham Almonte (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) carried the Philadelphia University baseball team to an 8-1 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Bloomfield on Thursday afternoon.

The Philadelphia (6-6, 3-3 CACC) bats were relatively quiet in the early going, getting just one hit off of Francesco Scudiero in the opening three innings. Then, the offense came to life in the fourth thanks to a pair of Bear errors.

The fourth opened with errors on balls hit by Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) and Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), and a fielder's choice off the bat of Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) that didn't result in an out. With the bases loaded, John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton) was plunked by a Scudiero offering to force Greenwood home for the game's first run.

After a strikeout, Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) delivered a two runs with a base hit back through the box that plated McCormick and Wells. Daniel Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) pushed the advantage to 5-0 with a two-out, two-run double to left-center field. Greenwood capped off the scoring in an 11-batter inning with an RBI single to left field.

The six-run cushion would be all Almonte would need as he surrendered just three hits in his seven innings of work and struck out four to earn the win (1-1). Almonte opened the game retiring the first seven batters he faced in succession and sat down nine in a row from the fourth through the seventh.

Philadelphia tacked out two more runs in the eighth with RBI singles by Wells and Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Adington).

The Bears (1-10, 0-4 CACC) broke up the shutout with a ninth-inning Harry Montero sacrifice fly.

Philadelphia recorded eight hits, two each from Wells and Garza. Five different Bloomfield players had one hit.

Despite not allowing an earned run, Scudiero took the loss (1-2). He allowed six runs on four hits and posted two strikeouts in four innings. Philadelphia has beaten Scudiero in both meetings with Bloomfield this season.

Philadelphia returns to Alumni Field on Saturday, March 28 with a CACC doubleheader against Post starting at noon. Post will have the final at-bat in both games.
