Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) recorded a match-high 13 kills and hit .550 to lead the Philadelphia University women's volleyball team to a 25-20, 25-15, 25-20 victory over the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Tuesday in the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia, a winner in 13 of its last 14 matches, improves to 15-5 overall and 11-2 in the CACC. USciences is now 4-14 overall, 3-10 in conference play.
Courtney Wensel (Bechtelsville, Pa./Berks Catholic) racked up eight kills and nine digs, while Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East) had six kills and nine digs.
Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil Academy) posted a match-high 18 assists. Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) was the match's defensive leader with 22 digs.
The Rams kept Hughes busy in the opening set as she recorded seven kills. Hughes had four of the team's first seven points to help Philadelphia get out to a 7-3 lead. Later in the set, the Devils rattled off three straight points, two on Simran Sangu kills, to move in front 15-13. A USciences attack error would be the catalyst for a 6-1 Philadelphia run to give the Rams a 21-71 lead and control of the set. During the run, the Devils committed four errors.
Despite outhitting the Devils .263 to .031 in the second, the Rams weren't able to break the set open until they went on a 7-0 surge to take a 22-13 lead. Manley led the way with two kills, while Alexandra Harrington (St. Leonard, Md./Huntingtown) added a kill and a service ace. The cushion grew to 10 (24-14) when Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) entered the match and delivered an ace.
Philadelphia faced a 13-10 set three deficit after another Sangu kill. Lauren Laucella (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) sparked a tide-turning 7-1 run, which gave the Rams a 17-14 lead, with one of her seven kills. After USciences closed the gap to 18-17, Philadelphia slammed the door on any hopes the Devils would have of extending the match with four straight points to move ahead 22-17.
Caitlyn Crawford paced the Devils with eight kills and six digs. Desirae Lair contributed seven kills, while Elizabeth Eaton had 15 assists.
Philadelphia faces Goldey-Beacom in a CACC match in the Gallagher Center on Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m.
