Baseball suffers sweep at hands of Dominican (N.Y.)

POMONA, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was swept by Dominican (N.Y.), 7-3 and 7-6, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Provident Bank Park.

Philadelphia is now 10-17 overall, 4-6 in the CACC, while Dominican improves to 9-13 overall and 3-5 against the conference.

GAME ONE
Philadelphia took advantage of a Dominican error to take a 2-0 lead on a RBI single by senior first baseman Jordan Force (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) and a RBI double from sophomore shortstop Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) in the first inning.

Dominican took charge of the game by scoring seven times over the next six innings to take a 7-2 lead after seven.

With two outs and runners at second at third in the second inning, freshman third baseman made a throwing error after fielding a ball hit by Riley Strickland to allow Carlos Strickland and Leonard Bravo to score and tie the game.

Dominican took the lead in the next inning on a RBI fielder's choice by Tyler Clark.

After taking a one run lead in the fifth on a wild pitch, the Chargers pushed across three more runs in the seventh. Robert Alonzo picked up an RBI with a fielder's choice and Lopez drove in two with a single to left field.

The Rams got one run back in the eighth thanks to a throwing error by Peter Martinez that allowed senior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) to score from third.

Junior designated hitter Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), Force and Gonzalez all had two hits for the Rams. For Dominican, Jayson Gray, Lopez, and Bravo posted a pair of hits.

Peter Martinez struck out four and gave up three unearned runs on nine hits over seven innings to earn the win (2-2). Junior David Lerro (Secane, Pa./Upper Darby) allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits in five innings in a losing effort (0-4).

GAME TWO
The Rams cashed in on a Force double and a Gonzalez bunt single to open the second inning to take a 2-0 lead.

With Force and third and Gonzalez at first, freshman catcher John Brocious (Bellmawr, N.J./Triton Reg.) successfully laid down a safety squeeze to bring Force home for the first run of the game. Junior third baseman Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) followed up by singling to left to score Gonzalez from third.

Sophomore pitcher Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) helped his own cause with a RBI single to extend the gap to 3-0 in the sixth.

McCormick, who extended his hitting streak to 10 with a first-inning single, made it a 5-0 game with a two-run, two-out double in the eighth.

Dominican came back with three runs, including a bases-loaded walk by Bravo and a RBI fielder's choice by Donald Crispyn, in the bottom of the eighth to shrink the Philadelphia lead to 5-3.

Senior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College High School) got a run back for Philadelphia with a two-out single to left to send home Gonzalez in the ninth.

In the bottom of the ninth, Dominican pushed across four runs to come from behind and steal the win. The Chargers opened the inning with singles by Gray and Jonathan Martinez. After Gray stole third, Alonso singled home Gray for the first run.

A Tyler Clark fielder's choice once again put runners at the corners. This time the Chargers pulled off a delayed double steal that scored Martinez and cut the Rams' lead to 6-5.

With two outs after a ground out, Christopher Cockie was hit by a pitch and stole second to plate runners at second and third. Luis Paniagua came up and singled to left field to bring in Clark for the tying run. Strickland delivered the walk-off single to center that brought home Cockle for the winning run.

Garza and Force led the Rams' 15-hit attack with four hits in five at-bats. Senior second baseman John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College High School) added two hits.

For the Chargers, Gray, Martinez, and Clark all posted two hits.

Joseph DeLaCruz recorded the final out of the ninth inning to earn his first win of the year (1-0).

Sophomore Abraham Almonte (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) suffered the loss (3-1) as he gave up four runs on five hits in 1.1 innings of relief.

Garza threw the first six innings, striking out seven, and allowing just three hits.

Philadelphia travels to USciences for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 at noon.
