PHILADELPHIA – Sophomore Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) and freshman Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) each threw a complete-game four-hitter as the Philadelphia University softball pulled off a Senior Day sweep of St. Thomas Aquinas, 3-0 and 8-0 (6 inn.), in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday.

The sweep improves Philadelphia's overall record to 19-25, and moves St. Thomas Aquinas to 5-27.

Prior to the start of the doubleheader, head coach Joe Long and the Philadelphia University department of athletics honored the team's three seniors: catcher Kacie DeMaio (Highland, N.Y./Highland), first baseman Nicole Singel (Exton, Pa./Downingtown East), and designated player Emilia Cantrell (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East).

Abromavage took the ball in game one and recorded four strikeouts, and just one walk, in her seven innings of work to record her seventh win of the year (7-14). After giving up a single to start the game, she found her groove as she retired the next nine batters in a row.

In the bottom of the first, junior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.) gave Abromavage some early run support  with a two-out, two-run single  to bring around Cantrell and junior third baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley).

One inning later, Cantrell delivered a two-out single to plate Abromavage—who walked to start the inning—home from second for Philadelphia's third run.

Riabko and Cantrell each finished the game with two hits for the Rams, who had seven in the game.

The Spartans' Maura Power was the losing pitcher.

In game two, Smith fanned eight batters over six innings to pick her win number nine (9-7).

Smith worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the second inning by getting a pop out with two outs. The defense came to her aid in the third. With no outs and runners at second and third, Smith induced a Jamie McCormick fly-out to freshman left fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg). Kakareka quickly threw the ball into Lewis and Lewis threw a strike to DeMaio to cut down Samantha McDonald trying to score from third. Smith struck out the next hitter to end the threat.

Philadelphia broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning as it scored on a bunt single by Kakareka and a groundout off the bat of Cantrell.

With the help of two Spartan errors to open the fifth, the Rams plated five runs—three on a bases-loaded double by Cantrell—to extend the gap to 7-0.

Smith ended the game in the sixth as she doubled home sophomore shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough)—who singled to start the inning.

The Rams pounded out 14 hits in the victory, led Martin and sophomore left fielder Emma Haley who had three each. Cantrell was 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Smith and DeMaio added two hits each.

Katie Meyers had two of St. Thomas Aquinas' four hits. Megan Sweezy was the losing pitcher.

Philadelphia heads to Holy Family for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 24 at 3 p.m.
