Rams drop a pair of games to visiting Le Moyne

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to visiting Le Moyne College Saturday afternoon on Alumni Field. The Rams narrowly loss game one, 6-5, and were defeated in the nightcap, 9-2.

In the first game the Rams (5-14) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the first. Center fielder Rick Reigner and second baseman Kyle DeGennaro both walked to open the frame and scored on a pair of errors on a ball hit by third baseman C.J. Wallowitch. Later in the frame, catcher T.J. Burgmann reached on a fielder's choice and came home on a wild pitch.

The Dolphins (11-4) came back in the second inning with five unearned runs, four coming on a two-out grand slam by center fielder Brett Botsford.

Right fielder Ryan Shellock closed the gap to 5-4 with a solo round-tripper, the team's first home run of the season, in the fifth.

The teams traded a run in the sixth.

Left fielder Joe Thayres, first baseman Jordan Force and Wallowitch had a hit for the Rams. Dolphins' designated hitter Matthew Ciraco and first baseman Paul Speicher recorded two hits.

Casey Cannon was the winning pitcher after going five innings in a relief role. He struck out two while allowing two runs on four hits. Don Bradley took the complete-game loss. He scattered six hits and fanned one.

Philadelphia took a 1-0 in the bottom of the first of game two by taking advantage of an error.

Once again Le Moyne came back with a big inning, a six-run second, to grab the lead.

Reigner cut the deficit to 6-2 with a sacrifice fly in the home half of the second inning.

Left fielder Zack Wiley had a RBI double in the third and shortstop Ryan Mahoney added a two-run single in the fifth for Le Moyne.

Pinch hitter Evan High and Wallowich had one hit each for the Rams. Wiley went 3-for-5 and Mahoney was 2-for-5.

Ed Kohout struck out nine hitters while earning the complete-game victory. Mike Ross suffered the loss after surrendering six runs, five earned, in 1.1 innings of work. He recorded one strike out.

Philadelphia takes the field again on Sunday, March 18 against visiting Kutztown at 1 p.m.
