Women's soccer upended by Mercy in double overtime, 2-1

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – The Philadelphia University women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 double overtime loss to host Mercy in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon.

Philadelphia is now 11-6-0 overall after the match, while Mercy goes to 5-12-0.

Lisa Shaw scored the deciding goal 3:51 into the second overtime. After receiving a pass from Jennifer Vega, who earned her second assist of the match, Shaw placed her shot into the lower left corner of the net.

After weathering an early Maverick barrage, Melissa Copeland gave the Lady Rams a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute after following up her first short and flicking the rebound into the upper right corner.

The score remained 1-0 until the 78th minute when Crystal Mena evened up the match at one.     Mena one-touched a Vega pass into the right side of the net for the equalizer.

Mercy controlled the play in the first extra session as it outshot Philadelphia, 4-1. Carla Hager forced Lady Rams' keeper Courtney Shaw to make a save in the 97th minute. Twenty-one seconds later, Mena fired off a shot that hit the crossbar.  Philadelphia's lone shot came off the foot of Copeland in the 96th minute and was stopped by Mercy's Stephanie DiLegge.

Shaw, who made her first collegiate start, finished with six saves, four coming in the first half. DiLegge stopped five shots.

The Mavericks outshot the Lady Rams, 18-10, and had an 8-0 corner kick advantage.

Philadelphia returns to Ravenhill Field to close out the regular season against fourth-ranked LIU Post on Saturday, Oct. 27 at noon. The team will honor its seven seniors prior to the opening kickoff.
