Strong Pitching Helps Rams to Conference Sweep of Wildcats

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Head Coach Mark Heineman got a pair of pitching gems from his Philadelphia University baseball team on Thursday afternoon as the Rams swept a doubleheader from Wilmington University by scores of 4-2 and 1-0.  With the victories, the Rams improve to 15-18 overall on the season and 13-6 in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC).

Junior right hander Kyle Noonan got things started for Philadelphia University, allowing just one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work on the mound.   The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning of play as sophomore second baseman Tyler Mentzer registered an RBI double and Noonan added a run scoring single in the bottom of the first.  Heineman's team extended the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, highlighted by Mentzer's RBI single with none out.  The Wildcats struck for two runs of their own in the top of the seventh and had the tying run on first, but sophomore John Pugh (pictured) slammed the door for his first save of the season as Noonan evens his record at 3-3.

Strong pitching on both sides led the second contest of the day to finish just before sundown as the Rams claimed the 1-0 victory in 11 innings.  Sophomore left hander Brian Rousseau threw seven shutout innings for Philadelphia University as he allowed just five hits and struck out six.  Junior Mark Pierfy picked up where Rousseau left off, throwing four shutout innings in surrendering just three hits.  Heineman's team plated the winning run in the bottom of the 11th when junior Rob Fisher drove in fellow junior Devin Conroy with an RBI single with one out as Pierfy picked up his first victory of the season.

Winners of four straight and six of their past eight, the Rams will host Felician College on Friday, April 25th to open a key league series with the Golden Falcons.
