Box Score Philadelphia University junior guard Mike Dunn
(Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin; pictured) poured in a team-high
19 points, including five three-point field goals, but it wasn't
enough to prevent an 81-75 setback to Kutztown
University in men's basketball action on Wednesday night at the
Gallagher Center. The loss drops the Rams to 6-10 overall
while the Golden Bears improve to 7-5 overall.
In addition to Dunn, senior forward Jason
Hickenbottom (Philadelphia, Pa./Simon Gratz) finished with
17 points and sophomore guard/forward Marcus Lemon
(Alexandria, Va./T.C. Williams) added 15 points and five steals in
a losing effort. Kutztown was paced by sophomore guard
Stephen Dennis (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) with
20 points and 16 rebounds.
The Golden Bears stormed out of the gate in the first half,
opening up a 14-2 lead at the 12:49 mark. The advantage would
grow to 17 for Kutztown when they led 31-14 with just 3:16 left in
the opening stanza. But Philadelphia University fought back,
going on an 11-2 run to close the half, with Dunn hitting two
three-pointers and Hickenbottom adding another in the rally that
gave the Rams a bit of momentum heading into the dressing room
despite being down 33-25.
After the relatively defensive start to the game, the two sides
began to find their range and were back-and-forth through the
opening stages of the second period, with
Philadelphia able to trim the Kutztown lead to three points on
a Russell Frederick (Joppa, Md./Calvert Hall)
layup with 8:32 left in the game. Frederick, as
usual, played all 40 minutes of the contest and finished with
a game-and-career-high 11 assists to go along with seven points and
five rebounds.
Lemon's layup at the 6:44 mark of the closing frame would cut
the Golden Bears' margin to two points at 57-55, but that would be
the closest the Rams would get to ever leading in the game.
Kutztown's percentage from three-point land would be
a blistering 61.5% (8-13), and overall they made just under
half of their total field goals (49.1%, 27-55). By contrast,
Philadelphia University shot 29.6% (8-27) from beyond-the-arc, and
42.2% (27-64) on total field goals.
The Rams look to get back on the winning track this Saturday,
January 12th at the Gallagher Center when they host University of
the District of Columbia; the non-confrence rematch tips off
at 2:00 p.m. In their fourth game of the season, the
Rams dropped a 59-53 decision to the
Firebirds in the Nation's Capital back on November 17, 2007.
