Women's Lacrosse Holds onto Tight Matchup to Secure Second Seed in CACC Tournament
PHILADELPHIA – Thomas Jefferson University women's lacrosse (10-7, 8-1) had a 8-4 lead heading out from halftime, but Wilmington University of Delaware (12-4, 7-2) fought back and tied it up at 12-12 with under three minutes to go.
Lilly Lutz had two free position attempts late in the game, with her succeeding in making her shot in the net with 1:35 to go as the Rams pulled out a 13-12 thriller over the Wildcats in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Wednesday. Jefferson is now the second seed in the CACC Championship Tournament.
WHAT HAPPENED
- Wildcats went up early 3-1 early, but Jefferson bounced back to have their own 3-1 run to make it 4-4 after one quarter. Meaghan Avanzato scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of action while Taylor Hood and Gabby Modzelewski had one apiece
- Jefferson showed their defensive prowess with no goals given up in the second while Reagan Rogers had two goals during that period with Hood and Avanzato adding one as well. The Rams went into the break ahead 8-4
- After Jefferson added a Gabby Modzelewski goal, Wilmington went on a 5-0 scoring spree to tie the game at 9-9 heading into the final quarter
- Emily Ryder and Lilly Lutz had the first two goals of the fourth for the Rams. After trading goals, the Wildcats hit their shots in the back of the net to even the game at 12-12 with 2:55 to go
- Wilmington received the draw control but missed their shot. Jefferson capitalized, getting the ball and going down field. Lutz gets fouled and goes to a free position. Her first attempt is saved, but another foul gives Lutz one more attempt. She drills the ball high in the net to give the Rams the 13-12 lead, which they would hold onto for the final 1:35 left in the game

Jefferson is now the second seed in the CACC Championship Tournament. They will receive a bye in the conference tournament for the sixth consecutive year and play in the CACC Semifinals for the 16th straight season since competing in the CACC in 2009 (2020 season did not play due to COVID-19). The Rams will either face the University of Bridgeport or Wilmington University on Tuesday, April 29 at 3:30 p.m.
