Baseball Drops First Doubleheader Against Southern New Hampshire 


PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (3-3) began the first of two doubleheaders against #14 Southern New Hampshire University (5-5) where the Rams fell to the Penmen 7-6 in game one and 11-8 in game two. 

WHAT HAPPENED 
GAME ONE: L 6-7 
The Penmen jumped out early to a 1-0 lead on an error, bringing a runner from second to homeplate. Josh Lopez tied the first game with a homerun in the bottom of the second. The Rams threatened in the bottom of the third with the bases loaded as Nico Quiroz was walked to first, J. Lopez advance to second, and Chris McLean got on third with only one out. The Penmen escaped with a fly to shortstop as well as a groundout. 

Southern New Hampshire broke the tie in the fifth inning, Lavigne double to center field on loaded bases brought all three runners' home and the Penmen retook the lead 4-1. Jefferson responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Marquie Wood hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Diego Santiago home and Alex Gonzalez to third plate. Gonzalez took advantage of a wild pitch, scoring for Jefferson and cutting the lead to 4-3. 

Southern New Hampshire added three runs in the sixth inning, two off wild pitches, to make the lead 7-3. In the bottom of the sixth, Santiago's ground out by the Penmen's second baseman got Quiroz to homeplate and having the game at 7-4 heading into the final innings. After the Rams only allowed one batter on base in the seventh, Jefferson looked to even the game and potentially take the lead. With two outs, Alexander Angulo came to pinch hit and delivered a two-run homerun for the Rams, getting them within one score of Southern New Hampshire. Quiorz was walked to first base for the potential tying run, but a Justin Espinal flyout ended game one.

GAME TWO: L 8-11 
The Penmen began game two with seven runs in the first two innings. A single in the first on loaded bases brought a runner home for Southern New Hampshire to have an early 1-0 lead. Southern New Hampshire added six runs in the second, with two homeruns that brought three Penmen to homeplate, and got them up 7-0. Wood brought Lou Spadafora to homeplate off a groundout, getting Jefferson a run in the bottom of the second. 

McClean hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the third and got the game to 7-2. Southern New Hampshire responded in the top of the fourth with four runs, putting them up 11-2. Jefferson added at least one run in the next three innings. Wood got Spadafora home once again as well as Al. Gonzalez off a double to rightfield as they cut the score to 11-4. 

After all three Penmen got out in the top of the fifth, Jo. Lopez hit a homerun for Jefferson, now getting it to 11-5. Another scoreless inning for the pitching by Joey Azzara kept the Rams inching closer to the Penmen. With two outs and bases loaded, Justin Egner hit a single to left center, allowing McClean and Jo. Lopez to homeplate and giving two runs for Jefferson. Joshua Lopez followed his teammate up as he doubled to right center, bringing Angulo home as the game was now 11-8 heading into the seventh. 

A doubleplay and flyout kept the Rams in closing distance to get back in the game at the bottom of the seventh inning. Gabe Silva hit a double to get on base and reached third on a wild pitch, but a flyout to center field conclude the first doubleheader with Southern New Hampshire taking game two 11-8.
