Women's Volleyball Suffers Close Loss to Kutztown
NEWARK, DE. - The Thomas Jefferson University women's volleyball team (0-2) began the Wilmington Wildcat Regional Invitational with a tough 3-2 loss to Kutztown University (3-3) in the WU Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set saw both teams score evenly, with Jefferson going up 5-3 before the Golden Bears scored the next three points. Kutztown would get another three point run, but the Rams would pull ahead 11-10 off their own three-point swing. Both teams would keep it close as they would be tied at 21-21, but the Golden Bears would earn four of the last six points to take the first set 25-23.
The second set would see Kutztown be up 5-2 before Jefferson would tie it up with three straight points. After the Golden Bears took a 7-6 advantage, the Rams would score five straight points, giving them momentum to go on a 15-5 attack and hold a 21-12 lead. The Rams would finish with four of the last seven points to take the second set 25-15 and even the series at one apiece.
After another even start from both teams, Kutztown would go ahead 7-5. After a Rams point, the Golden Bears would go on a 13-7 run and be ahead 20-13. Jefferson and Kutztown would trade four-point swings, with the Rams going on the spree two separate occasions to get within three points, but an attack error would give the Golden Bears match point for a 25-21 win in the third.
Kutztown would be ahead 5-4 in the fourth, but Jefferson would take the lead off a three-point run. Kutztown would regain the lead, going as high as 15-12 before the Rams would cut away at the advantage, tying the game up at 17-17. Jefferson would respond accordingly, taking eight of the last 11 points to take the fourth set 25-20 and tie the series at 2-2, forcing a fifth set for the second straight game in a row.
Jefferson would jump out of the gate, scoring seven of the first nine points to get ahead 7-2. Kutztown would chip away at the lead, eventually tying the game at 9-9. Both teams would keep switching the lead as they had the game tied at 14-14, but the Golden Bears earned two straight kills to take the fifth set 16-14 and win the series 3-2.
