PHILADELPHIA – The Thomas Jefferson University women's lacrosse team (2-5) came up on the short end of a high-scoring affair against Molloy (6-3) on Wednesday, falling to the Lions 19-16.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Molloy went up 2-0 in the blink of an eye, winning the first two draws and quickly finding the back of the net both times for the lead in just 34 seconds. The Rams responded with back-to-back goals by
Erin Avanzato to even the score at the 13:03 mark. The Lions tallied three in a row to go ahead 5-2 but Jefferson closed the first quarter with a 4-0 run for its first lead of the day at 6-5.
In the second, Molloy netted the first five goals to go up by four (10-6). The Rams finished the half with three of the last four to trail 11-9 at the intermission. The Lions started the third period with a 3-1 stretch to restore a four-goal cushion (14-10). Jefferson came back with two in a row before Molloy scored the last tally of the quarter for a 15-12 advantage entering the fourth.
Iris Gluck scored on a free-position shot with 11:19 to go in the final quarter to get the Rams within two (15-13). The Lions hit the back of the cage twice before Jefferson did the same and it was still a two-goal difference (17-15) with 7:16 left. Molloy won the next two draws and turned them into goals to lead 19-15 with 5:37 remaining. The Rams won the ensuing draw but the Lions caused three turnovers down the stretch and Jefferson was only able to score once more.
