Volleyball Rallies to Take Fifth Set Over Georgian Court to Remain Unbeaten in CACC Action
LAKEWOOD, N.J. - Thomas Jefferson University volleyball team (12-7, 9-0) were down 2-1 heading into the fourth set, but a close rally helped them go into the fifth set and take the match with a 3-2 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Georgian Court University (11-9, 5-5) in Thursday night action.
WHAT HAPPENED
Georgian Court was able to go up 7-6 in the first set before the Rams took the next four points. Jefferson would push themselves ahead 15-9, establishing their lead in the contest. After the Lions trailed only 16-13, another four-point swing by Jefferson got them up 20-16. The Rams would eventually take the first set 25-17.
The Lions would get ahead in the second as they were up 6-2 early on. Georgian Court would keep their lead, taking points each time, the Rams would get their momentum going. But Jefferson would not quit as they would go on a 7-1 run and be behind 20-19 to the Lions. Georgian Court would not let go of the set, taking five of the last six points to win 25-20 and even the series at 1-1.
Both teams would have the third set tied at 4-4, but two straight points for the Rams put them ahead. The Lions would secure the next four and be ahead, taking two points to Jefferson's one through the early portion of the set. After the Lions were up 15-10, Jefferson went on a 7-3 run to trail once again by one point, but Georgian Court would finish the set taking the last seven points to win the third set 25-17 and be ahead 2-1, having the Rams give up two sets in this game which is tied for how many they have lost to conference opponents up to this point.
Both teams would try to take this fourth set to either keep the match going or earn the win against a tough opponent. After a point by the Rams, the Lions would go on a nine-point run to be up 16-6. Jefferson would slowly cut into Georgian Court's lead as they eventually made it 20-13. The Rams would not go down without a fifth set, earning a 10-1 run to take the lead 23-21. After the Lions tied the match up, Jefferson secured the last two points to take the fourth set 25-23 and even it out at 2-2.
The Rams kept their momentum going as they would be up 7-0 early in the fifth. Georgian Court would take two points before Jefferson added four more to their lead. The Lions would go on a four-point run, but the Rams would end the set taking four of the last six points to win the fifth set 15-8 and come back to a 3-2 CACC win.
