WEST CHESTER, Pa. – The Thomas Jefferson University men's soccer team came from behind to defeat host West Chester, 2-1, in the season opener for both squads on Thursday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It was all Golden Rams in the early going as they earned four corner kicks in the opening 10 minutes, the last of which led to a 1-0 lead in the 10
th minute. The try from the near corner was headed in at the far post to put West Chester in front. Following the goal, Jefferson's offense started to open up and
Kai Mangahas narrowly missed on two opportunities, ringing a pair of shots off the woodwork.
The teams continued to trade opportunities throughout the first half. In the final minutes of the period, the Rams found the equalizer.
Mateo Infante swiped the ball from a West Chester defender attempting to clear from the top of the box. Infante turned and laced a shot on goal that was too hot for the keeper to handle, as the ball slipped through the goalie's hands and into the net to level the score in the 43
rd minute.
The first shot of the second half did not come until the 61
st minute but Jefferson made sure it counted. After a foul at midfield, the Rams played the ball up the right side. Infante streaked in from the near side before centering the ball. A cutting
Theophilus Ijeboi was able to deflect the ball into the goal and give Jefferson a 2-1 advantage.
West Chester managed eight shots in the frame but could not place any on target. In the final five minutes, the Golden Rams had three corner kicks and four shots as they pressured for the tying tally but the Jefferson defense held and secured the victory.
