Bass Flirts With No-Hitter In Baseball's Split At Dominican

ORANGEBURG, N.Y. – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (9-10, 1-2 CACC) split a conference doubleheader at Dominican (N.Y.) on Friday.

GAME ONE – W, 13-3
The game remained scoreless through the first four innings. The Rams finally broke through for three runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Josh Lopez followed by an RBI base hit by Zack Austin.

Jefferson broke it open with a seven-run sixth. Ryan Sawyer recorded a sacrifice fly, Alex Gonzalez singled in a run, Vince Barone drove in two with a base hit, and Austin blasted a three-run homer to right center. The Rams tacked on three more in the seventh, two on an error and one on a double by Lopez.

While Jefferson tallied up the runs offensively, Samuel Bass was keeping the Chargers off the board while not allowing a hit through the first six frames. He worked his way out of trouble on multiple occasions, stranding six Dominican runners on base. The Chargers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of walks and an error. Bass was just one out away from completing the no-hitter but Dominican broke it up along with the shutout with a bases-clearing double.

GAME TWO – L, 2-1
The nightcap remained a low-scoring affair throughout with the teams combining for just seven hits. The Rams struck first on an RBI single by Chris McLean in the second. Zack Austin racked up nine strikeouts through his first four innings of work on the hill but ran into trouble in the fifth. With runners on first and second and two away, Dominican doubled down the right field line to score both runners and take a 2-1 lead. Jefferson loaded the bases in the sixth and had the tying run in scoring position in the seventh but were unable to plate the equalizer.
