DeLorenzo Blanks Millersville In Nightcap As Softball Earns Split

PHILADELPHIA – Gianna DeLorenzo hurled a complete-game shutout in game two and the Thomas Jefferson University softball team (1-3) walked it off in the bottom of the eighth for a 1-0 victory to salvage a doubleheader split versus Millersville on Sunday afternoon.

GAME ONE – L, 8-4
Each team plated a run in the opening inning with the Marauders scoring on an RBI single while the Rams benefitted from a wild pitch. Millersville took the lead with a solo home run in the second then added three in the third on a pair of homers to make it 5-1.

Jefferson got within three (5-2) in the bottom of the third on an RBI base hit by Winnai Hoyt. The Rams narrowed the deficit to one (5-4) with two runs in the fifth. Julia Heine doubled in a run then scored on a single by Dallas Urban.

The Marauders got some insurance in the sixth with another two-run homer to increase the margin to three (7-4). Millersville drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to make it 8-4. Jefferson was unable to get any runners in scoring position after the fifth inning.

Quick Hits

- Winnai Hoyt: 2-for-3, RBI

GAME TWO – W, 1-0 (8 inn.)
The nightcap was a pitcher's duel that needed extra innings to decide the victor. The teams combined for just six hits through the first six frames with only five baserunners reaching second.

In the seventh, Millersville led off with a double to put the go-ahead run in scoring position but Gianna DeLorenzo bounced back with consecutive strikeouts for the Rams. She then got a fly ball to retire the side. In the bottom of the frame, Ellie Egher began the Jefferson at-bat with a base hit. After a fielder's choice, Annalise Pudimott singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. However, two more ground-ball outs sent the game into extras.

The Marauders threatened in the top of the eighth, loading the bases with two away. However, DeLorenzo answered with a strikeout, her third of the frame, to stop Millersville and give her squad another chance to walk off with the win. The Rams capitalized this time, sacrificing the tiebreaker runner to third then scoring on an error to win the ballgame.

Quick Hits
- Ellie Egher: 2-for-3, 2B
- Annalise Pudimott: 1-for-1
- Gianna DeLorenzo: Win, 8.0 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 4 BB, 9 K
