PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team continued its strong start to the 2015 season, defeating the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Wednesday afternoon on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts.
Philadelphia remains perfect at 4-0, 1-0 in the CACC, while USciences is 1-4, 0-1 against the conference. The Rams are now 2-0 this season against the Devils.
The Rams cruised to a 3-0 lead with victories in all three doubles matches. Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) and Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE) won the No. 1 doubles match 8-3 over Victoria Quang and Abbygail Gamarnik. Philadelphia's No. 2 team of Usha Baublitz (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) and Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) and No. 3 tandem of Carly Ragan (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Twp.) and Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) were both 8-1 winners.
Hamada earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles against Gamarnik. Baublitz got by Elkanah Linder 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 3 singles match. Sampaio was a 6-3, 6-2 winner at No. 5 singles versus Jillyan Serrano. All three players are now 4-0 in singles play this season.
Ragan picked up her first singles win of the season, 6-0, 6-1 over Andria Dang at No. 4 singles. Tabitha Porter (Sumner, Maine/Libson) also got in the win column for the first time this year with a 7-5, 6-0 victory against Allison Korn at No. 6.
Philadelphia steps away from dual match play to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association East Region Championship starting Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Legacy Youth Tennis Center.
