Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University men's soccer team had only two corner kicks in their non-conference match against Mercy, but the Rams scored of them both as they defeated the visiting Mavericks, 2-0, Tuesday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.
The Rams (3-1-1) earned their first corner of the match at the 42:39 mark. Cesar Romero (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) played the ball into the middle of the box, where it was headed back up in the air by Angelo Dambalas (Marlton, N.J./Cherokee). The ball made its way to Devon Memis (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickson) who was standing near the right post. Memis headed the ball into the vacant net for his first collegiate goal and gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead.
Philadelphia tacked on the insurance goal with 1:43 remaining in regulation. Dambalas outjumped the Mercy (2-3-0) defense in a crowded area to get to the corner taken by Seiji Rose. Dambalas' header beat Maverick keeper Julio Sanchez, who came off his line to attempt to get the ball, and snuck just under the crossbar. The goal was Dambalas' team-leading third of the season.
After not seeing a shot on goal during a very defensive first half, Philadelphia keeper Ben Sauer (Bel Airm Md./Perry Hall Christian) made two saves during the final 45 minutes to record his second shutout of 2015.
Sanchez made four saves, all during the second half, for the Mavericks.
Philadelphia outshot Mercy 13-8. In the first half, the Rams took three shots while holding the Mavericks to two. During the second half, Philadelphia took 10 shots, but had to fight off five Mercy corner kicks.
The Rams head to Dominican (N.Y.) for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 2:30 p.m.
