Women's soccer shutout by Bridgeport, 1-0

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's soccer team was defeated by the University of Bridgeport, 1-0, in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.

Carolina Rico scored the match's lone goal just 5:13 into the contest on a corner kick. Gabby Reis played a low corner into the 18-yard box that made its way to Rico 14 yards away from goal. Rico volleyed the ball with her right foot and found the back of the net for the score.

Bridgeport (4-0-0) had an opportunity to double the lead just 45 seconds later when the center referee awarded the Purple Knights a penalty kick. Amanda Moura's kick was easily handled by Philadelphia keeper Courtney Shaw (Langhorne, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), who read the play the entire way and moved a few steps to her right to make the save.

The Rams (1-3-0) had two chances to tie the match midway through the first half with a pair of corner kicks. On the first corner, Amy Heller's (Feasterville, Pa./Neshaminy) caused a problem for Bridgeport's Jennifer Wendelius as she mishandled the shot for another corner. The second kick had Megan Sullivan head the ball toward the goal, but her shot was cleared off the line by a Bridgeport defender.

In the second half, Talia Marano (Jeffersonville, Pa./Pope John Paul II) had the Rams' best chance at an equalizer in the 72nd minute. Marano received a pass close to the net, but had her shot saved by a sprawling Wendelius at the right post.

Shaw had a season-high seven stops for the Rams, while Wendelius recorded two saves for the Purple Knights.

Philadelphia heads to Dowling for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m.
