Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Junior midfielder Patrick Groh (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) came off-the-bench to score two goals and help the Philadelphia University men's soccer team defeat Millersville 4-1 for its first win of the season Wednesday afternoon on Ravenhill Field.
Philadelphia improves its overall record to 1-2-0, while Millersville falls to 1-2-0.
The Rams started out at the aggressor, outshooting the Marauders 8-2 over the opening 24 minutes. However Millersville keeper David Brubaker kept the match scoreless as he denied junior Ishmaiah Calwrie (Baltimore, Md./Randallstown) on a 14th-minute breakaway and made a diving save to his left on another Calwrie shot six minutes later.
Millersville's Devin Rediker broke through with the game's opening goal in the 30th minute. A Philadelphia miscue in its own box resulted in a loose ball ending up at Rediker's feet. He buried his shot from just outside the penalty arc into the right side of the net to put the visitors ahead 1-0.
Groh entered the match in the 35th minute and made his presence felt of the final 10 minutes of the first half.
In the 43rd minute, Groh evened the score as one as he drilled a rebound left after a shot from junior Dominic Rodriguez (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) into the open goal for his score of the year. Just over one minute later, Groh struck again with a goal from 10 yards out to give Philadelphia a 2-1 halftime lead.
Junior Ryan Schroy (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) tacked on an insurance goal on another rebound in the 75th minute to extend the gap to 3-1. Senior Victor Chagonda (Harare, Zimbabwe/St. George's) took the initial shot that forced Brubaker out of position and gave Schroy an open net.
Rodriguez got into the goal column in the 83rd minute on a breakaway after getting a long pass from junior Zach Brown (Bowie, Md./St. John's College)
Senior keeper Neil Kwiatkowski (Schenectady, N.Y./Duanesburg) played the first 45 minutes to earn the win. Senior Thomas Attamante (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) made two saves in the second half.
Brubaker stopped nine shots for Millersville.
