PHILADELPHIA – Junior shortstop Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) delivered a two-out RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to help the Philadelphia University baseball team win game one against Le Moyne 2-1 and earn a split of the non-conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins won the second game 2-0

The double was a big part of a 6-for-6 day at the plate, which included three doubles, for Gonzalez. He recorded three hits in each game.

Philadelphia (3-8) took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the second inning when senior catcher TJ Burgmann (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle College High School) grounded out to second base and brought junior designated hitter Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) from third. McCormick opened the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a Gonzalez double.

The Dolphins (4-7) took advantage of a Ram error to tie the game at one in the top of the sixth. Brett Charbonneau led off the inning by reaching base on a dropped pop-up. Dylan Swetman, the next hitter, immediately made Philadelphia pay for the miscue with a double to deep left center field to plate Charbonneau.

Philadelphia came up with a huge defensive play to prevent further damage by the Dolphins. With Swetman at third and one out, sophomore reliever Abraham Almonte (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) got Trey West to ground into a 2-3-5 double play and end the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth the Rams put together a two-out rally to reclaim the lead. McCormick started things off with a single and moved to second on a base hit by senior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner). Then, Gonzalez drove the first pitch he saw into the left center field gap to plate McCormick.

Almonte earned his first win with the Rams (1-0) by turning in 1.2 innings of perfect relief, including three strikeouts, in place of junior starter David Lerro (Secane, Pa./Upper Darby). Lerro allowed just the one unearned run on two hits and fanned five in 5.1 innings.

Ryan Davis took the loss (0-4) as he gave up two runs on six hits and struck out six in six innings.

Swetman went 2-for-2 to lead the Dolphins.

The second game was a pitchers' duel as both teams only mustered four hits.

After five scoreless innings, Le Moyne broke through in the sixth with a sacrifice fly by Charbonneau to bring Tyler Schmitt, who singled to open the inning, home from third for the game's first run.

Pat Wright added an insurance run in the first with a lead-off home run to left field in the seventh.

Philadelphia was able to get the tying run on base in the seventh with a lead-off single by McCormick and a one-out single from Gonzalez, but couldn't get either player home.

Ryan O'Kane (3-1) turned in an eight-strikeout, four-hit performance to earn the complete game win. Junior pitcher Stephen Dickerson (Columbus, Ohio/Danbury) fanned five in a complete game loss (1-2).

Philadelphia and Le Moyne will complete their weekend series with two more seven-innings games on Sunday, March 9 at Father Judge High School starting at noon.
