Women's volleyball clinches playoff spot with 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team secured its spot in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament with a 3-0 win over Goldey-Beacom Tuesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia improves to 14-14 overall and 11-7 in the CACC after taking the match by set scores of 25-19, 25-20, and 26-24. The Rams will make their ninth straight appearance in the conference tournament.

Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) and Terra Ecker (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) led the Rams' offense with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Corrine Justus (Allentown, Pa./Emmaus) and Erin Lyman (Algonquin, Ill./Huntley) both recorded nine kills.

Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil's Academy) contributed 25 assists, while Claudia Papola (Temple, Pa./Muhlenburg) had 24 assists.

Michele Chai (Sinking Spring, Pa./Berks Catholic) paced the defense with 23 digs.

Led by seven Hughes kills, Philadelphia recorded 19 kills in the set one victory. With the set tied at three, Hughes, Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles East), and Justus each had a kill to give the Rams 6-3 lead. Another Manley kill—one of her seven in the match—extended the Philadelphia lead to 19-13. Philadelphia closed out the set with a 5-2 surge, capped by a Hughes kill.

Philadelphia used an 8-2 to dig out of an early 5-1 deficit and take a 9-7 lead. Manley would push the lead to a set-high seven points (21-14) with a kill. After Goldey-Beacom closed to within 21-18 on an attack error, Philadelphia scored four of the final six points to take a 2-0 match lead.

The Rams never trailed in a final set that was tied four times. Philadelphia held a 22-18 lead before Goldey-Beacom went on a 5-1 run to tie the set at 23 on an attack error. After trading points to make it a 24-24 affair, the Rams would get a Lyman kill and a block from Lauren Elliott (Austin, Texas/Middlesex) and Justus to win the match.

Kadi McCoy had a match-high 17 kills for Goldey-Beacom (13-16, 7-12 CACC). Danielle Cipolletti added 24 assists and 16 digs.

Philadelphia closes out the regular season with a CACC match against Bloomfield on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m.
