Men's soccer falls to Millersville in season opener, 3-1

MILLERSVILLE, Pa.  – Junior midfielder Jonathan Fredericks (Newark, Del./Charter School of Wilmington) scored the lone goal for the Philadelphia University men's soccer team in a 3-1 loss to host Millersville in the season opener for both teams Thursday afternoon on Chryst Field.

Trailing 2-0 in the 75th minute, Fredericks was able to locate the loose ball during a scramble in front of the Marauder net and tap the ball home to bring the Rams within one.

Jaime Vazquez broke a scoreless tie with a pair of second-half goals, separated by 1:25, to give the home team a 2-0 lead. Vazquez's first goal came at the 54:50 mark on a give-and-go with Jeramey Robbins at the top of the box. Vazquez struck again at 56:15 with a shot from 15 yards out with an assist from Andrew Dukes.

Robbins scored the match's final goal with 9:31 left.

Junior goalkeeper Thomas Attamante (West Orange, N.J./West Orange) made four saves in the loss, three saves coming in the first half to keep the match scoreless. Brad Benzing stopped one shot for Millersville.

The Marauders owned a 21-10 shot advantage.

Philadelphia hosts Wheeling Jesuit in its first home match of the season on Saturday, Sept. 7 at noon.
