Women's tennis triumphs over USciences, 9-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team knocked off the University of the Sciences, 9-0, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match Wednesday afternoon on the Abraham Salaman Courts.

Philadelphia has won its second straight match and is 4-2 overall, 2-1 in the CACC. USciences falls to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in conference play.

The Rams' No. 1 tandem of freshman Naia Bengoa (Caracas, Venezuela/San Ignacio de Loyola) and senior Isabella Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano de Quito) and No. 2 team of senior Elizabeth Verbits (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett) and junior Sylvia Bennicelli (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) were both 8-1 winners. Junior Magill Kurts (Burlington, N.J./Burlington City) and freshman Anna Slomowitz (Glen Mills, Pa./Garnet Valley) knocked off Tea Cadenovic and Marysu Kamlau in the No. 3 match, 8-5.

Freshman Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa) kicked off singles play with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the No. 3 flight against Alexis Vidal. Bengoa secured the match as she took out Melissa White, 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 2 match.

In a battle of No. 1s, Espinosa was a 6-3, 6-2 win over Victoria Quang. Slomowitz claimed the No. 5 singles match against Kamlau by a 6-3, 6-0 score. Bennicelli needed a tiebreak to win the No. 4 match with Dang 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5). In the No. 6 match, freshman Daniela Rosen (Boonton Twp., N.J./Mountain Lakes) defeated Cadenovic 6-1, 6-0.

Philadelphia will turn its attention to the three-day ITA East Region Championships at the Legacy Youth Tennis Center starting on Saturday, Sept. 21.
