NEW CASTLE, Del. – The Philadelphia University softball team dropped both ends of its Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader to host Wilmington (Del.) University, 2-1 in eight innings and 9-1 in five innings, Wednesday afternoon on Asbury Field.

Philadelphia is now 13-23 overall and 5-11 in the CACC. Wilmington goes to 22-16 overall, 9-5 against the conference.

The Rams overcame a 1-0 deficit in the top of the seventh inning when freshman pitcher Kasia Smith (Waddell, Ariz./Estrella Foothills) helped her own cause with a sacrifice fly that plated junior center fielder Samantha Riabko (Haddon Twp., N.J./Haddon Twp.)—who singled earlier in the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, Christin Headley started the frame off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, SkyeBoris singled Headley home to give the Wildcats the win.

Chelsea Botsch earned the victory as she went eight innings, gave up an unearned run on four hits, and struck out one. Smith suffered the loss as she allowed two runs—one earned—on eight hits and fanned three in 7.2 innings.

Sophomore shortstop Stephanie Martin (Hanover, Md./Seton Keough), junior third baseman Meaghan Lewis (Binghamton, N.Y./Chenango Valley), and sophomore second baseman Samantha Abromavage (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) each had one hit for the Rams.

Cambria Ziemba recorded a RBI single in the fifth for Wilmington.

In the second game, Martin walked with one out in the top of the first. She went to second on a ground out, third on a Riabko single, and gave Philadelphia 1-0 advantage by scoring on a wild pitch.

Then, Wilmington scored nine unanswered runs, including four times in the bottom half of the first inning. Headley went 2-for-4 with a RBI triple in the fourth and a RBI double in the fifth. Jillian Stafford contributed run-producing singles in the first and fourth.

Katie Warrington struck out four over three innings to earn the win. Abromavage gave up six runs—two earned—on six hits in 1.1 innings and took the loss.

Freshman left fielder Renee Kakareka (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg) had Philadelphia's other hit.

Philadelphia travels to Felician for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 13 at noon.
