Women's volleyball sweeps CACC foe Goldey-Beacom, 3-0

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's volleyball team swept Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Goldey-Beacom, 3-0, Wednesday night in the Gallagher Center.

With the win, Philadelphia—using set scores of 25-18, 25-19, and 25-23—improves to 19-6 overall and 13-5 in the CACC, and secure a home match in the opening round of the CACC Championship Tournament that begins on Tuesday, Nov. 6. The Lady Rams close out the regular season at Felician on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.

Junior outside hitter Brittany Olson (Sycamore, Ill./Sycamore) was Philadelphia's outside leader with 10 kills. Freshman Allison Manley (Saint Charles, Ill./Saint Charles E.) posted nine kills and 16 digs. Senior middle hitter Ellie Edgar (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) added eight kills.

Junior setter Heather Martin (Leola, Pa./Conestoga Valley) recorded 21 assists, while freshman setter Nina Morvin (Willow Grove, Pa./Saint Basil's) tallied 16 assists and 14 digs.

Senior libero Morgan McCarthy (Beaver, Pa./South Side) was the defensive leader with a match-high 23 digs.

The Lightning (4-21, 0-17 CACC) got 14 kills, a match-high, from Kadi McCoy.

Trailing 5-2 in the first set, Philadelphia used a pair of Olson kills during a 5-0 run to take a 7-5 lead. The Lady Rams slowly worked their lead up to five when a Lightning attack error made the score 18-13. The last of Manley's three set one kills gave Philadelphia its largest lead of the set at 23-15.  Olson finished the set with four kills.

The second set saw Philadelphia jump out to a 7-3 advantage. The last of Olson's set-high five kills gave the team 23-15 lead, the largest in set two.

Three Goldey-Beacom attack errors combined with two kills each from senior outside hitter Danielle Carney (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Thousand Oaks)—who finished the match with seven kills—and Manley helped Philadelphia jump out to a 10-4 set three lead. The Lightning used the rest of the set to close within 24-23. Freshman middle hitter Chelsea Hughes (Wading River, N.Y. / Shoreham-Wading River) closed out the match with her third kill.
